So, quick story about this, because I've actually had this idea for months, but I've been very ho hum about actually bringing that idea out, or bringing it to live.
BUT, having been in sim leagues since roughly 2012/13, using many different forms of simulation, from NHL to EHM to FHM to UHS, and there's always been a constant when it came to the actual simming.
- Games are simmed, injuries occur (depending on league), and basically nothing else from that spectrum.
- Trades usually happen because this GM likes this guy and wants him on his team, and most of the time tactics are thought as a secondary option
- Offseasons are usually very straight-forward; Draft, Free Agency, Roster Clearing, extra trades to help cap/rosters.
Basically, the basic essentials to make a GM sim league work, which is not a bad thing. It's a tried and true method that has worked for years, with minor tweaks here and there. But, something in my mind was swirling around, something that could make the boring times (slow sim weeks, offseasons, waiting for marquee free agents to sign, etc.), kinda make things interesting, but challenge the mind and plans of a GM.
So, this is my idea of NHL Re-Imagined;
- The sim league will be very similar to Ironman, Rock 'Em, and Hock League. Simulation would be from the latest version of NHL (because for me, I think, it's a little bit easier of a version to retain information, and most people have the game themselves so they can do their own kind of pre-management work, see what works before they post lines or trade for players).
- The rosters would be edited a bit, using 3-year statistics, and less of the base EA ratings, and help make it more realistic (we'd talk about player type changes too). Think similar to Tougie24's Ratings Changes, but it would be less biased (because I think Carey Price is not an 83, which is what he's suggesting. That's absolutely absurd when the NHL Players Association keep voting him as the best goalie in the game today).
So far, nothing out of the ordinary. Here's where it veers a little more different;
- I would introduce player/team scenarios and incidents! How that would work is that all throughout the year (time between scenarios/incidents and how many to do is still WIP) certain teams would have certain scenarios or incidents with players. For example, Edmonton could have an issue with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, since he feels unappreciated on the team, and wants that to be fixed, whether it be a big asset traded away, or himself traded away. Or, Robbi Fabbri had a monster of a training camp, and has looked better than ever, so he receives a permanent +1 to his overall rating.
Now, how would it work? I would be using basically a RNG wheel to determine the following things;
- Where it is happening (Prospect Pool, Ownership, Team or Fans)
- What team is being involved (One of the 31 teams in the league)
- What player (Out of the 50 or less players on the roster)
- What is actually happening (which would probably be a separate wheel, pending what is happening).
Other notable examples of what could occur;
- Top Prospect Owen Power decides to play semi-pro basketball through the summer, and drops 5 spots in the Central Prospects Rankings
- The fans are unhappy with the recent actions of Anze Kopitar, and are starting to boycott games and requesting him out of Los Angeles.
- New York Rangers ownership is requesting more American Talent on the roster. They ask of the GM to add 2 players born in USA by the Trade Deadline.
- Marquee european free agent Tobias Enstrom has a breakout season in Finland, and comes into free agency with a permanent +3 to his overall rating.
- Cory Schneider announces his shock retirement after no bidders in free agency.
- To keep transparency and not have angry people thinking we're targeting them, I would screen record the entire process and show that it is completely random, and in no way I would be influencing it.
The Benefits to Player/Team Scenarios/Incidents;
- It creates more buzz for the forum and the league. Keeps users interested.
- It keeps GM's on their feet, so if anything does happen, they can adjust on the fly.
- There's more interest in GM's wanting to look through the forums every day, and not all of a sudden leave after a couple days in free agency because 'It's too slow'.
The downsides to Player/Team Scenarios/Incidents;
- Casual GM's would definitely have no interest in something like this.
- There could be a chance that RNG randomizes one team more often than another. (My initial idea is to have at least 1 scenario for each team, but there could be an instance that say Vegas could have 6 situations compared to Toronto's 2)
- It could cause a mini-chaos if a superstar player has something negative happen, and could cause a ruckus from the GM (i.e. McDavid out the first 4 weeks of the season from a Training Camp injury).
I kinda want to get your opinion on this. Would this work? Would this last through to actual sims, or even through a whole season? Will this create enough spark to fill all 31 GM slots? Tell me what's good and what isn't!
