So, sometimes a player might excel in an area that isn't traditionally associated with whatever player type they're designated as. For example, an OFD who is near the top of the league in hits/blocks etc, but doesn't excel in the ways an OFD normally would. We could offer upgrades to these types of players, but on the condition that they accept a change of player type to the type their play has reflected.
Example: Player X is an 83 OFD. His point total was poor, but he was close to the top of the league in hits/blocks. Player X has the option to remain an 83 OFD, or accept a +1 upgrade and become an 84 DFD.
Might be too much additional work, but I thought it would be a cool idea that might address how sometimes players performance in sims deviates from the way they're "supposed" to play. Thoughts?

Former Canucks GM, why would they get a +1 for changing positions. Just change their position in the off-season. Problem solved.

...It's not a plus one just for changing positions? The point is if a player excels in categories that would result in an upgrade for a player type that isn't their own, they can switch player types to get that upgrade. You said it yourself that there are certain areas that are focused on for players of a certain type to get an upgrade. If an OFD kills it in areas that a DFD would get an upgrade for, it might give GMs an incentive to build their teams based on how guys actually end up performing rather than the label the game gives them.
Again. It's just an idea. For fun.

I check 4 stats for all defencemen, Pts, Tks, Blks, Hits. Depending on their player type, certain stats are worth more for upgrades. If you see them get better for a different player type, just change them in off-season.

I don't think the spirit of what I was going for is really getting through, but gotcha What you are suggesting only brings in more downgrades. What you are speaking of for upgrades can already happen. If an OFD defenceman gets an unreal amount of blks and barely any points, instead of the minus -1 or -2 he should be getting, he would get nothing with the possibility of a +1. Your suggestion would make it more black and white for the stats that are used and that would give more downgrades for underperforming dmen. You just don't get a free position change with the system now. Each team gets 2 every off-season.

I wasn't aware that upgrades would be treated that way. I also don't see how my suggestion would make it more black and white in general when literally it would only be dealing with exceptionally over performing players in certain categories.

Like what if a TWD performs average in most categories, wouldn't get an upgrade normally, wouldn't get a downgrade, but was absolutely unreal in blocks and hits? A lot of people consider player type in how they build their teams and offering a modest upgrade based on switching player type would make GMs rethink how they're building their team and would also highlight to GMs around the league what players are exemplifying the play style they're looking to add to their teams.

This idea is to make things more engaging and fun for GMs. If nobody likes the idea then sure, but it's probably worth seeing if anyone thinks it's an interesting concept before outright dismissing it.

I'm not trying to dismiss it but I don't get why they would get a free upgrade for changing their player type. Also if their is upgrades, what would be the downgrade part of it.

There doesn't have to be a downgrade part of it. If players are playing exceptionally as a different player type (I.E. if they would have already gotten that upgrade if they were that player type), then their GM has the opportunity to take the upgrade they would have gotten and change the player type or stay the course and keep the player as they are within the framework of their team.
For example: I have Quinn Hughes OFD 87. If I paired Travis Hamonic DFD 82 with Hughes and he ended up lighting it up and scoring a shitload of points, in this system, I would be proposed during the upgrade/downgrade phase with the prospect of keeping Travis Hamonic DFD 82 or getting Travis Hamonic OFD 83 (since that's how he played that year). That's an instance in which I actually would not take the upgrade, but it adds some more engagement and strategy. Nobody is going to look at Hamonic's point total and go change him to an OFD. And that's not the point.
It makes things a little less one dimensional and brings something else to the upgrade/downgrade phase of our seasons. Maybe the difference to the actual outcome of sims is marginal. I thought it was a fun idea. That's it.

I think that's an interesting idea, but it would be a lot of extra work for the simmer/PR to not only take into account a player's main type, but all his other possible types as well. I think the best thing to do is to simply change a player's type according to how he performs, though it would be cool if it were manageable.

For sure, the reason I’d see it not working is because of the extra work for the simmer.
